The Super-Hoist
The super-hoist is self-tipping. It originated from the first self tipping hoist that was built in 1961 from an old car diff. It hauls a bucket from underground to the surface loaded with half a ton of opal dirt, tips into a truck, and returns to the underground miner ready to be filled again.
A 415-volt, 7.5 hp electric motor, powers this hoist. It drives a hydraulic pump that drives two hydraulic motors, one on each end of the winch drum.
This hoist has a creep back devise, so if the generator stops the bucket slowly creeps back down the hole so the miner is not trapped underground. There is no room for a miner to climb past the bucket if it stops half way up the shaft.
Our bucket has a trap door in the bottom of it for extra safety, so if by any chance the rope gets tangled and the bucket is jammed in the shaft, the trap door can be opened to let the dirt out and I can climb up through the bucket to the surface. I have never had to spend a night underground and I don't intend to.

The bucket is a fairly tight fit in the shaft. The tin shaft collar is larger than the actual shaft.
