Opal Doublets From A Miner

Brilliant Opal Doublets are a very under rated stone. They are just as attractive and beautiful as solid black opal gemstones, but a fraction of the price. A thin slice of gem opal crystal is resined to a piece of black potch to enhance the colours and give it stability.

There is a myth, the resin used in doublets separates. This may have been the case with the very early glues used to make doublets, but with today's technologically advanced resins it would be almost impossible to separate the doublet even if you wanted to.

I had a conversation with an elderly woman, who was the owner of a very small pub in Sydney, early 2003. After mentioning to her I was an opal miner from Lightning Ridge, she went on to explain how she had inherited an opal from her Grandmother and was concerned about it's change in appearance. I told her I would have a look at it if she liked. After serving a customer the woman went away and shortly returned with a very old, hand made, gold brochure with a quite large red doublet set in it. The glue in the doublet had started to separate and the centre was loosing its brilliance. She then went on to tell how she had been told you should store opal in water. I do not know how long this doublet had been kept in water for, but it was her grandmother's and the woman was at least 65.

Keep doublets away from methanol and petroleum products.
