Black Opal Carvings
The most beautiful and unique of all opal is the Black Opal Carvings. By using this method of cutting opal the colour and shape is determined by the way nature formed it. Sometimes a piece of opal rough with brilliant colours has to be cut and ground away, wasted, to cut a calibrated stone. Using a dremell drill instead, and quite a lot of patience, a gem can be created which is absolutely unique in its shape and colour. The cutter can also optimise the facing characteristics of the opal. As with any free form opal they need a custom setting. Most miners don’t bother with Opal Carvings because of the high cutting costs. Opal cutters become quite ecstatic when they create a gem masterpiece, which has an absolute uniqueness, that can never be recreated or duplicated. If you choose a carving as a gift, you have the satisfaction of knowing no one will have one the same anywhere.
